Ritwik Ghatak was born on 4 November 1925. A gifted and influential filmmaker, he mainly worked in the Bengali Film Industry. His meticulous depiction of emotions of character amidst tumultuous social upheavals has garnered cult status. Along with Mrinal sen and Satyajit ray, Ghatak was exponential of parallel cinema. He wrote his first play Kalo Sayar in 1948. He went on to direct films like Nagarik(1952), Ajantrik(1958), Meghe Dhaka Tara(1960), Komal Gandhar(1961), Subarnarekha(1962), Titash Ekti Nadir Naam(1973, Jukti Takko Aar Gappo(1974). He also wrote scripts for films like Madhumati(1958). Ghatak died of tuberculosiscomplications on 6 February 1976.
